Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is located in Berkshire, England. It is one of the oldest castles in the world today. It is also the largest occupied castle (45,000 square meters). Throughout its history, Windsor Castle has been used as a military fortress, a home, a palace, and even a prison. Today, it is one of the primary residences of the British Monarch; Queen Elizabeth II spends much time there. Currently, there are five areas open to the public, making it a beautiful tourist attraction.

Windsor castle has played an important role in the nation’s past. The original castle, built by William the conqueror, does not exist today. Its strategic location was a perfect for military uses, due to its high position on a hill overlooking the river below. Since its first establishment, almost 900 years ago, it has been destroyed, rebuilt, and enlarged to make it the castle we see today, each ruler and war changing it through time.
