Ghiberti's Doors at the Baptistery

The Baptistery, located in Florence, Italy, was built in 500 AD (or close to). Obviously it was a place where people were baptized. This beautiful building is famous for its 3 set of fancy bronze doors. One set was molded by Pisano in 1330 AD and the other two were carved by Ghiberti in the 1400’s. A contest was actually held in 1401 for the design of the second set of doors. Ghiberti was proclaimed the winner. These doors are similar to Pisano’s design but have more depth and naturalism. After completion of the second set, Ghiberti was assigned to do the third set as well. This set is bigger and all gold with greater clarity and understanding; because of this they were nicknamed “The Doors to Paradise.” Without a doubt Ghiberti’s doors make the Baptistery a must-see attraction for tourists visiting Florence.
